Pharmaceutical agents in many topical spot-on flea treatments, including fipronil, have been found in concerning levels in UK waterways. They are extremely toxic to invertebrates and may be toxic to other species, so we need to be mindful of their potential for environmental toxicity and use them in an appropriate way. It is important that the product leaflet is followed, and that the product is applied to your pet properly, following the manufacturer's' instructions. Ideally gloves should be worn when applying these products and disposed of appropriately after use in household refuse. Animals should not be allowed to swim, or be washed or taken to the groomers for a number of days after application of the product (check the product leaflet for specifics). It's also really important that the packaging is disposed of appropriately in household refuse and that the right product is used in the correct way for the species listed on the product.
